Fascination With Puzzle Boxes

"Objects with secret openings of course do exist outside fiction (and escape rooms), and have been around for a very long time. Their original purpose was to protect valuables. Throughout history, cabinet makers put hidden compartments in furniture; desks included secret drawers; jewelry boxes had concealed nooks; strongrooms and safes had hidden doors with camouflaged opening mechanisms; locking mechanisms included secret tricks to thwart thieves even if they acquired the key. These objects were not designed for amusement, their purpose was strictly functional, but they do have a remarkable entertainment value when presented with a challenge to uncover their secrets"
